John Millard DJ
Zip first picked up a set of turntables in 1992. After spending the
next couple years perfecting his technique, Zip acquired his first
residency at By George DanceClub in Columbia Missouri. For the next
5 years DJ Zip anchored the mainstream/commercial club scene in Columbia.
In August of 2000 Zip moved on to a new venue. Though his experience
at By George was priceless in developing his skills, Zip sought a
different sound. He left his family at By George for the virgin venue
know as Tonic in downtown Columbia Missouri. While still keeping with
his roots of hip hop and commercial house, Zip began to drop much
deeper, darker, and dirtier beats. Dub, tech-house, funky, and progressive
house quickly became a staple at Tonic. During this time, Zip also
began 2001 brought more challenges. Zip aided his friend Tim Convy with a small part audio production of the 2001 and later the 2002 MTV Video Music Awards. It was also during this time that Zip decided it was time to drop the moniker of DJ Zip. He opted for his given name of John Millard. Dropping the name by which you've built your career is difficult. Fortunately, John's career began to bloom and 2002 quickly became his breakout year. 2002 brought the birth of Zipfield Productions (John and partner Nick Bryant's production/promotion crew), residencies at Aqua in Kansas City Missouri, multiple special events at Velvet, The Living Room, Kastle, Blu, and The WS Hotel in Saint Louis Missouri, as well as a residency with Provence Music which hosts events in Tulsa Oklahoma, New Orleans Louisiana, and Chicago Illinois. On November 2, 2002, John and fellow Velocity DJ Hugh Tychsen laid down the beats at Nelly's birthday party hosted by St. Louis' The Living Room. 2003
started off with what John calls his proudest accomplishment to date.
